The City of Selma has announced that free broadband internet and tablets will be provided to the Selma Housing Authority as part of what has been dubbed “Smart City Initiative” by Mayor Darrio Melton.

Starting on August 1, free Wifi service will be given to George Washington Carver Homes, one of Selma’s public housing facilities in cooperation with Selma Housing Authority. The speed of internet service will reach up to one gigabit per second.

Additionally, the Housing Authority has purchased tablets to provide to residents in the complex between the ages of 11 to 18.
In the announcement the City of Selma stated that this will be the first phase of Inspire Connect, which will be an effort to provide “free or low-cost broadband services to low-income households.”
