U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-7) has announced that 17 housing authorities in the seventh district have been awarded more than $8 million in COVID-19 relief funds, including the Selma Housing Authority, which was given $309,692.

“I am thrilled by the additional funding allocated to public housing authorities across my district to support their efforts to protect their residents against the health threats and serious financial hardships caused by the Coronavirus,” Sewell said in an announcement.

“This pandemic has only amplified the real health and economic challenges facing vulnerable communities. I know that these funds are not enough to solve this problem, but it is my hope that they will help bridge the gap as we continue to work toward finding a vaccine and cure to the COVID-19 crisis.”

The funds were included in CARES Act supplemental public housing operating funds that was passed recently. A total of $8,243,026 were given to the seventh district’s housing authorities.

“I am so grateful for all of Congresswoman Sewell’s work in securing these funds,” said SHA Executive Director Kennard Randolph. “These funds will go a long way toward helping us keep our staff and continue to operate, providing necessary services for our most vulnerable.”
